SUNY's Data Ecosystem encompasses several interconnected systems, repositories, reporting tools, and governance structures that support data collection, management, analysis, and decision-making. Data originates from a variety of institutional and system-level sources, including student information systems, academic records, enrollment and workforce datasets, financial systems, and external partners. Understanding how these data sources relate to one another is essential for identifying reliable information, ensuring consistency in reporting, and supporting evidence-based planning, assessment, and policy development throughout the SUNY system.

SUNY Business Intelligence Platform πŸ”’

SUNY's primary business intelligence and reporting platform is based on Oracle Business Intelligence, and provides access to the largest collection of institutional data available to System Administration and campus users. Through dashboards, reports, and query tools, users can explore official SUNY data on topics such as enrollment, student outcomes, and transfer activity. SUNY BI is typically the best starting point for accessing and analyzing advanced SUNY data.

Best for: Enterprise reporting, detailed data extraction, ad hoc analysis, and access to official SUNY data.

SUNY Transfer Equivalency Platform

Unlike the broader reporting and analytics tools, STEP is specifically designed to support transfer-related work by providing access to course equivalencies, transfer pathways, and other information that helps users understand how credit moves across SUNY institutions. STEP provides a consistent source of data to support transfer planning, policy implementation, pathway development, and transfer analysis.

Best for: course equivalencies, transfer paths, articulation information, transfer planning, and transfer-specific reporting.

SUNY Tableau Server πŸ”’

Tableau is one of SUNY's primary data visualization platforms. While SUNY maintains a repository of Tableau dashboards, the platform itself is best understood as a tool for presenting and exploring data through interactive visualizations. Tableau enables users to analyze trends, compare outcomes, and monitor key metrics through intuitive dashboards that make complex data easy to understand. It is widely used across SUNY to support reporting on transfer, enrollment, student success, and institutional performance.

Best for: Interactive dashboards, trend analysis, performance monitoring, and broad data sharing.

Power BI

Power BI complements SUNY's reporting and analytics ecosystem as a tool for creating and delivering interactive dashboards and customized data solutions. Rather than serving as a central data repository, Power BI is a tool that enables users to explore institutional and transfer-related data through dynamic visualizations, apply filters, compare trends, and drill into detailed information. Its flexibility makes it particularly well suited for targeted analyses, operational reporting, and decision-support tools tailored to specific business needs. Power BI is the primary tool used by the SUNY Office Transfer and Articulation to create accessible visual dashboards.

Student Transfers Dashboard

The Student Transfers Dashboard provides multiple perspectives on student transfer activity within and beyond SUNY institutions:

View from the Former Institution: includes tabular and graphical summaries of the top institutions or non-SUNY sectors receiving students from a selected campus, as well as the most common program areas students enter after transferring.

View from the Current Institution: focuses on incoming transfers, displaying the leading institutions or sectors from which students transfer and the top program areas students enter at the selected campus.

Current Institution Trends: allows users to compare incoming transfer patterns across multiple terms, helping identify changes over time and enabling multi-term analysis that can be applied to the other dashboard views. Together, these pages support analysis of transfer destinations, transfer sources, academic program pathways, and longitudinal transfer trends.

Academic Programs Dashboard

The Academic Programs Dashboard provides comprehensive academic program-level data through tables and visualizations covering six years of enrollment, first-year retention, degrees awarded, and degree recipient GPA outcomes. Each report includes five-year change metrics and corresponding percentage changes to support trend analysis. Reports include a filter for Higher Education History, where “Undergradaute Transfer” may be selected.

Early Enrollment and End-of-Term Enrollment Dashboards

The Early Enrollment and EOT Enrollment Dashboards provide detailed enrollment data for SUNY students from Fall 2002 forward, offering both point-in-time and trend analyses across a wide range of student, geographic, academic, and institutional characteristics. Users can examine enrollment by educational history (Undergraduate Transfer) and explore multi-year trends in these measures. Additional pages support analysis of academic indicators, including high school averages and standardized test score ranges, as well as enrollment by academic program, discipline, award level and classification of the program. (Note: End of term [EOT] information reflects student enrollment at the end of each academic semester.)

Retention Dashboards

The Retention Dashboard provides cohort-based retention measures with a particular focus on transfer student success. Users can analyze one-year retention rates for transfer cohorts by entry term, receiving institution, academic discipline, and originating campus. The dashboard includes specialized views of SUNY-to-SUNY transfer cohorts, allowing institutions to evaluate retention outcomes by receiving academic program, sending community college, and prior credential earned.

Student Outcomes
Graduation Rate Dashboards

The Graduation Rates Dashboard provides cohort-based graduation outcomes for students at SUNY institutions, reporting both the number and percentage of students who earn a degree within specified timeframes after initial enrollment. Users can select cohorts by institution and academic term to examine degree completion patterns for part-time and transfer students at both the associate and baccalaureate levels. The dashboard includes measures of graduation success at multiple milestones, allowing users to evaluate student progress and completion rates over time. Results are limited to students who graduate from the institution where they initially enrolled and who earn a credential at the same academic level as their original enrollment.

Separate dashboard pages are available for Baccalaureate Part-Time and Transfer Cohorts and Associate Part-Time and Transfer Cohorts, providing detailed analyses of degree attainment among first-time part-time students as well as full-time and part-time transfer students.

Educational Outcomes Dashboard

The Educational Outcomes Dashboard provides cohort-based measures of student educational outcomes using data from both the SUNY Data Warehouse and the National Student Clearinghouse. These dashboards track students from their initial cohort term through a selected reporting term, reporting outcome counts and rates based on each student's highest educational achievement during the reporting period. Because each student is counted only once, the dashboards provide a comprehensive view of overall student success, including degree completion, continued enrollment, and transfer activity within and beyond SUNY institutions.

The Associate Transfers page focuses specifically on transfer behavior among associate-degree-seeking students, identifying whether students transferred to SUNY or non-SUNY institutions and the highest SUNY credential earned by the reporting date.

This resource supports curriculum planning, transfer advising, pathway management, and the evaluation of course equivalencies by providing a centralized view of transfer path structures and requirements throughout the SUNY system.

The Campus-to-Campus Course Equivalency Map provides a comprehensive view of established course equivalencies between a selected sending and receiving institution. Users can review how courses transfer, what credit is awarded, and how coursework applies at the receiving campus. The report supports transfer advising, articulation management, curriculum review, and pathway development by providing a transparent view of transfer credit relationships between institutions.
