SUNY Transfer Paths summarize the common lower division requirements shared by SUNY campuses within most major academic disciplines. Campuses are responsible for identifying associated SUNY Core Courses in the interest of providing incoming students and transferring students with clear, consistent, and universal pathways for transfer between SUNY programs. The following resources have been assembled to provide campuses with information regarding local development and maintenance of SUNY Transfer Paths and core courses.
SUNY Transfer Paths were established by SUNY policy to support the seamless transition between SUNY programs, especially two-year to four-year programs. The following principles form the foundation for SUNY Transfer Paths:
• Associate and baccalaureate faculty shall develop and agree on transfer paths consisting of commonly defined, foundational courses in the major and associated cognates. Core courses in the major equate to lower-division courses required at other SUNY campuses, facilitating guaranteed transfer between SUNY campuses.
• Transfer paths enable students to complete their SUNY General Education Requirements and essential foundational courses in their chosen discipline within the first two years of full-time study. Additionally, a baccalaureate degree must be achievable with two more years of full-time study.
• Each undergraduate curriculum developed or revised as part of a transfer path must allow students to complete enough major courses within the path to achieve junior status within the first two years of full-time study. Program requirements should reflect this capability. The Office of Academic Programs, Planning, and Assessment includes SUNY Transfer Path requirements in the curriculum review processes.
• Each curriculum aligned with a transfer path must ensure that incoming transfer students receive major-applicable credit for successfully completed Core Courses in the academic discipline, as well as related cognate courses, provided they have earned a minimum grade of C or higher.
