SUNY strives to be the most transfer-friendly system of higher education in the nation. SUNY has developed SUNY-wide transfer policies and procedures to make transferring credit and transitioning to a new SUNY campus as seamless as possible. The following resources are designed to help you learn more about the policies and benefits of being a SUNY transfer student.
A series of policies and programs exist that provide you with guaranteed credit transfer and progression toward your degree.
New York State residents who are graduates of a SUNY two-year program or college or a CUNY two-year college who earn the A.A. or A.S. degree, are guaranteed an opportunity to continue their education on a full-time basis at a baccalaureate campus within SUNY.
The SUNY General Education Framework provides a common foundation that enables students to acquire knowledge and skills that are useful and important for all educated persons regardless of their chosen field of study, job or profession. Because SUNY has this common framework, A.A. and A.S. graduates are guaranteed credit transfer for general education.
✔ Satisfactorily completed general education requirements at one SUNY campus will meet the same requirement at another SUNY campus. (2013 Seamless Transfer Policy)
✔ When you satisfactorily complete a general education course on a SUNY campus, the campus will provide a General Education Transcript Addendum (GETA) which will indicate that the requirement is complete. Any SUNY campus receiving your transcript and credit, is required to accept the course and show that the general education requirement is also complete. (2013 Seamless Transfer Policy)
✔ Local general education requirements beyond the SUNY-wide requirements cannot require you to exceed the number of credits to graduation required of first year starting students in the same program. (2023 General Education Framework Guidance, 2013 Seamless Transfer Policy)
SUNY's Transfer Paths provide you with the opportunity to attend a SUNY community college, while making guaranteed progress toward your bachelor's degree in any SUNY four-year program offering the pathway.
✔ All approved and listed SUNY Transfer Path courses are guaranteed to transfer as courses in the major or required cognates - not just as electives - if completed with the grade of C or better.
✔ If a Transfer Path course is equivalent to or replaces a prerequisite course at the incoming campus, that course shall also fulfill the local prerequisite, and the student can move into the higher-level course at the receiving campus.
