The SUNY Cross Registration program was developed to promote timely degree completion by you with access to courses at other SUNY campuses while you remain enrolled at your home campus. The following FAQ provides answers to some of the most commonly asked Cross Registration questions.
The following terms are important to know when reviewing cross registration information and using the online portal.
Home SUNY Campus: The campus where you are currently enrolled at as a degree-seeking (matriculated) student.
Host SUNY Campus: Another SUNY campus where you will pursue a course while enrolled at your home campus.
Consortium Agreement: The cross registration financial aid agreement that allows you to combine credits at a home and host campus to reach full time status and receive financial aid benefits.
The following questions pertain to cross registration generally and includes basic information about the process and policy.
Cross registration is where one SUNY institution (a Host institution) provides instruction for a student enrolled (matriculated) in an undergraduate degree-granting program at another SUNY institution (the Home institution) during the same academic term.
You will complete an application on the online SUNY Cross-registration Portal. Once you submit a request, the campus will review your submission.
(1) An advisor or mentor on your home campus will review the course to determine if it is degree applicable, and eligible for registration.
(2) Once the advisor or mentor approves, the student records office or registrar will also review the course.
(3) After you receive preliminary approval from your home campus, the request is sent to the host campus records office to review.
(4) The host campus will determine if you are eligible to register for the course based on the host campus prerequisites, policies and available space.
Once they make a determination, you will receive an email from suny.edu with the outcome. Once approved, you register for the course at the host school.
The cross registration policy permits campuses to register and approve part-time students for cross registration. You may also be able to combine credits across your Home and Host campus for financial aid eligibility purposes provided that the courses are applicable and transferable to your academic program or degree. Due to the financial aid requirements and campus residency requirements, your home campus policies may have certain requirements in place for part-time students. Please be certain to speak with your home campus advisor prior to applying and registering.
During standard fall and spring sessions, you are eligible to cross register at all SUNY universities and colleges, including community colleges.
Campuses may optionally participate in cross registration in summer and winter sessions as well. Please contact your academic advisor on your home campus to determine if your campus approves summer or winter registration. Please review the cross registration policies for the host campus to determine if they accept summer or winter cross registration requests.
Cross registration is not available at the New York State schools at Alfred University and Cornell University. In addition, cross registration is not available for joint programs with non-SUNY campuses. Study abroad programs use distinct consortium, enrollment and aid agreements, and are also not eligible for cross registration.
The following questions pertain to the registration process and the use of the online portal.
No. Cross-registration policies pertain to credit-bearing courses only. You may be permitted to independently audit, however. Contact a host campus registrar or student records office for additional information.
No. You cannot file a retroactive request. In order to enroll in a cross-registered course, you must submit your request before the host campus cross-registration enrollment timeframe ends and receive all home campus approvals by their posted deadlines. This is due to the need to receive prior consortium approval to remain complaint with state and federal financial aid and student reporting regualtions.
Before applying and registering, you should speak with your academic advisor on your home campus. You advisor or mentor may be a faculty member or an advisor in an advising or student success office. They will help you review your degree requirements and your degree audit (if applicable) and determine which courses are options. When you apply via the online portal, your request and the course is officially approved by your home campus and will be accepted if you earn a satisfactory grade.
You will register at times determined by the host campus. Please contact the host if you have any questions, and view the host campus registration calendars and policies to determine registration times. Please note that the registration times may not match the registration times at your home campus.
In addition to having access to course maerials and having access to the host campus tools, you will receive a communication from the suny.edu cross-registration portal once you are marked as officially registered.
You are also encouraged to be in contact with the host campus student records office or registrar to be assured you are enrolled in the course and have access to host campus systems if you experience any problems or need assistance.
You are required to review the official academic calendar for both the home and host campuses to determine deadlines for cross-registration requests and enrollment deadlines. Here are a few of the critical dates and deadlines you should be aware of. Your home or host campus may have other dates pertaining to specific aspects of registration or attendance that you should be aware of.
Cross registration request submittal / approval deadlines:
Campuses often have dates and deadlines for the completion of a cross registration request to be assured your financial aid can be properly awrded and your enrollment can be reported.
Withdrawal deadlines:
While the host campus withdrawal deadline is critical as well, your home campus withdrawal deadline can also have bearing on your financial aid and full-time enrollment. Be sure that you know and understand the impact of your home campus withdrawzl dates and deadlines.
Enrollment and registration period:
The host campus registration timelines and windows may not line up with the dates on your home campus. Please be sure you are aware of the host campus registration periods, since you will be required to adher to those, versus your home campus dates.
Withdrawal deadlines:
The withdrawal deadline for the host campus will often determine if you are able to withdraw, and if you are able to withdraw, what financial liability you may have. If you determine you cannot continue in a cross registered class at a host school, you should begin the withdrawal process as soon as possible to avoid any financial or grade penalties.
