The State University of New York cross-registration policy was developed to promote timely degree completion by providing access to courses at other SUNY campuses. In addition, many campuses collaborate via cross-registration to strengthen academic programs or provide students with a broader array of experiences and options.
A key feature of the cross-registration policy is the SUNY Financial Aid Consortium Agreement. The Financial Aid Consortium Agreement establishes a university-wide financial aid arrangement that enables any SUNY student who is eligible for aid, matriculated in an eligible program, and enrolled at a SUNY campus, to register for academic credit at another SUNY campus. Program-applicable credits may be combined into a full-time load for financial aid purposes using the SUNY Financial Aid Consortium Agreement.
If you would like to cross register, you should begin the process by speaking with your advisor or mentor on your home campus to learn more about your home campus policies and deadlines. Your advisor or mentor can also help you determine if a particular cross-registration course will be a good match, and help you understand if it will help you fulfill your degree requirements in a timely way. Your campus may also have transfer requirements, residency requirements and other important policies that should be taken into account as you consider cross-registration. In addition, you are encouraged to speak with your financial aid counselor on your home campus, to understand how financial aid may be used.
1 |
Speak with your academic advisor or mentor. Check in with your academic advisor or mentor to be assured that cross-registration is appropriate. You will want to be assured that any courses you take will transfer, and that you have the ability to cross-register given your current home campus class load. Your advisor may also be able to help you decide which course or courses should be pursued using cross-registration versus registering as normal on the home campus. |
2 |
Speak with a financial aid counselor. If you plan to use financial aid when cross-registering - especially during a summer session or winter session - you should be assured it will not impact your financial aid eligibility in any unexpected ways. Using aid during summer or winter session can reduce your eligibility for aid in spring or fall terms. |
3 |
Apply online. After you have consulted with your advisors, you can apply online. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time and be certain that you apply before any deadlines at the home or host campus. Be certain to use your campus email address, versus a personal email address. |
4 |
Obtain a certificate of residence. If you are attending a SUNY Community College, you are required to obtain a certificate of residence (COR) from your home county to remove the out of state tuition charge from your bill. |
5 |
Receive approval. The cross registration process will require you to monitor your campus email, and respond to any inquiries you may receive from the home or host campus. You may be sked to complete admission forms or non-student registration forms. In addition, your home campus registrar may require additional information to approve registration. You will receive your approval to register via the cross registration portal. |
6 |
Register as directed by the host campus. Generally, you will be given permission to register at the host campus and provided with directions. If you have any questions about this step, contact the host campus registrar for assistance. |
7 |
Attend your class. After you complete the registration process, you will attend the class based on the host campus calendar, and pursuant to their policies. Please note that the host campus may have different class start and end dates, registration dates, and withdrawal dates. Please learn about these critical dates using the host campus catalog. |
8 |
Monitor and follow-up if needed. Once you attend and successfully complete your class, you normally will not need to take any additional steps. You are not required to request or pay for a transcript, since it will be provided to your home campus as part of the process. If you have any issues, please contact your home campus for assistance. |
